The weather has gotten cooler, the leaves are turning gorgeous golds, oranges & reds, (just about at peak for the beautiful fall foliage!) and pumpkins are popping up everywhere! That’s right, its harvest time here in the Finger Lakes! The harvest is always an exciting time, with lots of extra hours put in at work but also celebrating! Here at the bakery we get to reap many of the rewards of the harvest without having to work in the fields, but we do have to get to the bakery a little earlier! We’ve got the regional favorite grape pies & turnovers made with hand picked locally grown Concord grapes! (We just have to make sure they make it to the display case before we eat them all!)
We also get to take part in several of the local harvest celebrations! Last night, Thursday October 11th, we participated in the Deb Whiting Harvest Celebration in Watkins Glen. It was a great event showcasing the local foods, wines & beers produced in the Finger Lakes. We brought our scones to sample and while the blueberry seemed to be the crowd favorite, our cranberry orange scones worked the room and found fantastic pairing partners in our neighboring tables! The tropical fruit flavors and honey finish of the Vidal Ice from Standing Stone Vineyards worked wonderfully with the cranberry orange scones as did the Coffee Porter from Wagner Valley Brewery! A couple of great food & drink pairings for your next party! We met lots of new faces and saw a few of our regulars and got to meet some of the other local businesses. It was a fun night and a great event!
This Saturday, October 13th we will be a part of the Montour Falls Harvest Festival! This festival takes place on Main Street in Montour from 1-8PM. We will be hosting pie eating contests at 2:30 & 4:30 with a celebrity contest at 3:30 featuring the mayors of Montour & Watkins Glen among others!! There will be music, a pumpkin carving and scarecrow contest, food & crafts throughout the day all being capped off with fireworks over the falls at 8:15PM!! Make sure if you’re in the area you don’t miss this event!
Hope everyone has a chance to celebrate the harvest, get out and enjoy the beautiful colors of the Finger Lakes in the fall & stop into the bakery for some bread or bagels and a coffee!
